Sustainable Development Goals

What are the SDGs?

The Sustainable Development Goals are a collection of 17 Global Goals set by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015 for the year 2030. The SDGs are part of Resolution 70/1 of the United Nations General Assembly, the 2030 Agenda.

The SDGs are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice. The Goals interconnect and in order to leave no one behind, it ís important that we achieve each Goal and target by 2030.

The 17 sustainable development goals each have a list of targets which are measured with indicators. Key to making the SDGs successful is to make the data on the 17 goals available and understandable.

How Is Bader Related to the SDGs?

It's important to know that Bader connects to the SDGs way before they were first set and announced. Sustainability in general is a big part of our life and the world we live in. He was first introduced to the general term and understanding of "sustainability" in college when he was pursuing his bachelor's degree in Environmental Health and Safety. It only took one subject - Sustainable Development - and one great lecturer to open his mind to a big world of care, love, and safety. This idea and concept stayed with him for long, that rang in every other subject and every other thing he read, did, or saw in the world around him.

When Bader joined AIESEC in 2014, their volunteer programs and overseas projects where mainly based on enhancing tourism, cultural awareness, and building leadership. However due to the bond AIESEC holds as an organisation with the United Nations, once the SDGs were announced, it was vital to update AIESEC's ultimate purpose and goals to align with that on the UNs. As to his luck, by 2015 Bader has already achieved a leading position in AIESEC that pushed him to attend its conferences that gave a better understanding towards the SDGs

How are Related to Travel, Tourism, and the Journey?

A big part of implementing and understanding the SDGs is through tourism. Whether an individual or a group of travelers, or a company - the way you interact with the environment and the world around is connected to one or more of the goals. Your habits and behaviors make a change.

“Tourism plays a vital role in many, if not all, of the 17 Goals”, said UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili. “Tourism has come of age as a cross-cutting economic activity with deep social ramifications, and the Tourism for SDGs Platform is providing the global tourism community with a space to co-create and engage to realize the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”, he added.

During his journey, Bader will be shedding light on each of the goals from time to time, either through his social media platforms, or through his videos. He will seek organizations, volunteer communities, or by simply observing the environment around him to point out how each country is implementing the SDGs, whether they are aware of it directly or indirectly. Ultimately his goal is to spread awareness for those that need it, and promote the SDGs for a better practice to help achieve these goals globally.
